You can't bring your DSLR everywhere and every time with all your equipment (lenses, tripods, flashes...). This little thing helped me to have good pictures. Now my needs evolved, I'm really thinking about investing in a new interchangeable lens compact camera as an Olympus PEN, Sony NEX or a Panasonic GF... :-)

In My Garden: Coming Home To Myself

In My Garden: Coming Home To Myself

Twice in my life, I’ve planted an extensive garden - only to have my landlord announce they were putting the house on the market. In both cases, I bought the house rather than leave the garden behind. I guess I’m what you would call a plant person.

My first job, in 1968, was at a nursery. Since then, I’ve managed retail nurseries, run a garden design business, and even owned a small organic vegetable-growing business.

When I sold my home in California, I left behind a garden that I’d invested an enormous amount of time and energy in. The yard buzzed with activity as hummingbirds and butterflies moved through colorful perennial beds, and trees I’d planted as foot-tall youngsters were now 20 feet tall, casting their shade across the back yard.

I didn’t plant a garden when I moved to Oregon. Instead of working at a nursery, I found a job at a nonprofit and spent my days sitting in front of a computer. There was a hole in the middle of my life that I couldn’t articulate, and my life felt dull and lusterless.

That changed this spring, when a neighbor generously offered to till up three garden beds in my yard and helped me to reclaim a vital part of my identity. I am a gardener once again.

This year, I’m eating vegetables I’ve grown myself. I know where the garter snake in my squash bed lives. I’ve marveled at the delicate green arabesques of broccoli heads as they go into flower, and spent an afternoon watching a cicada emerge, shiny and new, from its cast-off skin. I’ve come home to myself here in my garden, and it’s a joyous homecoming.

My new Strobist kit container

My new Strobist kit container

After adding up the dollar value of all my lighting gear and finding out that it costs more than what I paid for my SLR body and walk-around lens, I decided that "cram everything into a little nylon pouch" is no longer an acceptable option.

I invested in a Pelican 1500 case. Built in my home-town of Torrance, CA - these cases are just about the toughest case you can buy. I routinely ship $30,000 prototypes for my day job in them - those damn cases had been deployed to just about every former soviet republic, every country in the pacific rim, most of western Europe. They had collectively survived the shipping department of the US Navy, Russian customs, and TSA inspection monkeys. Unless I wanted to find myself flying on short notice to Siberia to fix a prototype ... it's being packed in a Pelican.

At $129 it's not cheap - but neither are the pocket wizards! And quite honestly for how expensive PWs are, their built quality is absolutely sh*t. Sink marks on the injection molded case, crappy plastic with not enough internal ribbing... Anyway, this might be a bit overkill - I need to rig another sling to clip to the locking latches and see how well it carries slung over my shoulder with the rest of my equipment pack. But it sure is nice, with the fitted foam inserts, waterproof gasket, pressure equalization valves...

I'm such a geek.

Mercedes-Benz took part in the world championship in 1954 and 1955, but despite being successful with two championship titles for Juan-Manuel Fangio, the company left the sport after just two seasons.
Mercedes-Benz returned as an engine supplier in the 1990s and part-owned Team McLaren for some years, to which it has supplied engines engineered by Ilmor since 1995. This partnership brought success, including drivers championships for Mika Hakkinen in 1998 and 1999, and for Lewis Hamilton in 2008, as well as a constructors championship in 1998. The collaboration with McLaren has been extended into the production of roadgoing cars such as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
In 2007 McLaren and Mercedes was fined a record $100 Million for stealing confidential Ferrari technical data.
In 2009, Ross Brawn's newly conceived Formula One team, Brawn GP used Mercedes engines to help win the constructor's championship, and Jenson Button to become champion in the F1 drivers' championship. At the end of the season, Mercedes-Benz sold back its 40% stake in McLaren to the McLaren Group and bought 70% of the Brawn GP team jointly with an Abu Dubai based investment consortium. Brawn GP was renamed Mercedes GP for the 2010 season and is, from this season on, a works team for Mercedes-Benz.

Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict With a New Introduction by the Author

Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict With a New Introduction by the Author

From the oilfields of Saudi Arabia to the Nile delta, from the shipping lanes of the South China Sea to the pipelines of Central Asia, Resource Wars looks at the growing impact of resource scarcity on the military policies of nations.

International security expert Michael T. Klare argues that in the early decades of the new millennium, wars will be fought not over ideology but over access to dwindling supplies of precious natural commodities. The political divisions of the Cold War, Klare asserts, have given way to a global scramble for oil, natural gas, minerals, and water. And as armies throughout the world define resource security as a primary objective, widespread instability is bound to follow, especially in those areas where competition for essential materials overlaps with long-standing territorial and religious disputes. In this clarifying view, the recent explosive conflict between the United States and Islamic extremism stands revealed as the predictable consequence of consumer nations seeking to protect the vital resources they depend on.

A much-needed assessment of a changed world, Resource Wars is a compelling look at warfare in an era of rampant globalization and intense economic competition.

The Meaning of Water

The Meaning of Water

Local Meanings of Irrigation Water: property rights and irrigation in Australia and S.E. Spain presented by Denise Galvin (Universidad de Alicante)

Physical and socio-economic changes during recent decades have altered the spatial distribution of global water resources. In areas where there was once considered to be an abundance of water, superficial and groundwater resources are now either over-exploited or contaminated. To resolve this dilemma, many nations are in process of reforming their water industries. In many countries, the irrigation industry is often the first to under-go reform because it is where a high percentage of a nation's water resources are diverted. There are many examples where the reform of this industry is directed by a new philosophy based on the re-allocation of water rights in the hope that this will support increased user participation. Documented experience points are not much more than a cacophony of environmental expert discources based on misleading theory which blocks inflitration by those who manage the resource at the local level.

The Race for What's Left: The Global Scramble for the World's Last Resources

From Michael Klare, the renowned expert on natural resource issues, an invaluable account of a new and dangerous global competition
The world is facing an unprecedented crisis of resource depletion—a crisis that goes beyond "peak oil" to encompass shortages of coal and natural gas, copper and cobalt, water and arable land. With all of the Earth's habitable areas already in use, the desperate hunt for supplies has now reached the final frontiers. The Race for What's Left takes us from the Arctic to war zones to deep ocean floors, from a Russian submarine planting the country's flag under the North Pole to the large-scale buying up of African farmland by Saudi Arabia and other nations.
As Michael T. Klare explains, this frenzy of extreme exploration and acquisition carries grave consequences. With resource extraction growing more complex, the environmental risks are becoming increasingly severe: the Deepwater Horizon disaster is only a preview of the dangers to come. At the same time, the intense search for dwindling supplies is igniting new border disputes, raising the likelihood of military confrontation. The only way out, Klare argues, will be to alter our consumption patterns altogether—a crucial task that will be the greatest challenge of the coming century.

  • the degree of uncertainty as to the realization of expected returns.

People come in levels. Slowly built over time and shaped by the events, emotions, and actions performed through out the daily life.

Returning

Returning

Hello my friends! As the sun begins its slow return to the top of the sky so to have I returned to flickr, and oh my does it feel good! Before I go on I want to say thank you to everyone who sent me well wishes and encouragement when I left the project. I was very touched and your words were much appreciated.

So where have I been? Isn't it obvious from the photo above? Well, honestly this fall has been a blur so I’m not even sure I remember all of it. I’ve been working full time, going to school full time, traveling around the world (literally - Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi) for my job, and getting several great photography experiences outside the project (wedding, newborn, family shoots and even some work chosen for a gallery show!) all while trying not making my hubby/friends feel like the absolute last priority on my list.

After I stopped posting I actually kept up with my photos for a couple weeks until one sleep deprived day I realized I hadn’t even thought to take a picture for several days. That, on top of being two weeks behind in processing (not to mention all the processing I was doing for the other shoots), pretty much broke my resolve to continue.

So while I am disappointed that I was unable to finish the journey that I started, I am proud of what I have accomplished this past year and of the doors it has opened for me. I have really missed the flickr community though and I am looking forward to catching up on all your streams. Anyone planning a 52-week project next year? If so, I’m in!

Return of the Bell

Return of the Bell

One of my favorite parts about living in Grenada is that you never know what you'll be called on to photograph - and with my day-to-day grind variety is hardly in short supply.

On this particularly rainy day I was in my office, snacking on Skittles editing photos when I received a call from the campus facilities manager asking if I'd be around after lunch. "We're putting the bell back in the tower," he says. Images of cranes and boom-lifts flashed in my mind. "Awesome," I say. "Count me in."

The bell in question was removed to receive a little TLC after sitting silent in Grenada's salty breeze for more than two decades - and best of all - was getting a new clapper fitted. Legend has it that the original clapper went missing when the bell was first crated up and sent to Grenada.

The legend goes something like this...
The bell was cast in 1845 by the New York based Meneely Bell Foundry and placed aboard a naval ship. More than a century later the ship is long gone and the private owner of the bell donated it to the University. The bell arrives by ship in Grenada, gets hoisted into place, and someone realizes that the all-important clapper is nowhere to be found.

The bell was ceremonially re-rung for the first time last week at the annual Grenada Thanksgiving Memorial, ringing loud and clear - just as an old bell should.

Indo-Bangla summit marks bold shift in ties

Indo-Bangla summit marks bold shift in ties

Foreign policy analysts, economists and former diplomats yesterday said the Bangladesh-India summit marked a bold shift in the relationship between the two countries and the success of it would depend on proper implementation of follow-up actions.

However, some others regarded the summit as disappointing and said Bangladesh had lost its bargaining position by conceding to Indian demands for allowing use of its ports and signing deals on terrorism. They said Bangladesh got little against its demand for a deal on Teesta water sharing and scrapping Tipaimukh dam project.

They were talking at a roundtable organised by The Daily Star yesterday on the summit and its outcome at the newspaper's conference room.

It was felt that the agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) would create new frontiers of economic activities if implemented properly. For the first time, Bangladesh would be able to trade its service in the form of transportation of Indian goods and thereby reduce the huge trade gap between the two countries.

But some others felt that instead of surprising the nation with some of the agreements, the government should have discussed the issues in parliament and reached a consensus.

They also felt that the immediate task now is to form a high-level ministerial committee and move towards implementation of the agreements.

Prof Rehman Sobhan said the Bangladesh-India summit set the climate for negotiation on unresolved bilateral issues, including maritime and land boundaries and water-sharing issues.

He, however, said critical issues cannot be solved in one summit. "A summit is all about atmosphere and communication. Through this summit the climate has been set," he said, adding, "We cannot expect the prime minister to come home with a bagful of goodies."

Adviser to the BNP chairperson, Reaz Rahman, described the outcome of the summit as very disappointing.

"Look at the Indian gains. There are too many gifts for India. The balance of the game was seriously skewed," he said, terming the move to open up Chittagong and Mongla ports to India "mega concessions".

He said Bangladesh made four "mega concessions" in bilateral security, connectivity, economic cooperation and "psychological game". "The concessions will have far-reaching implications," he said. He criticised the government for neither examining the issues nor discussing them with the opposition.

On the energy sector, Reaz, who is also the former adviser to the foreign ministry, said the government made a quantum leap into the dark.

Bitterly criticising the government for allowing India to use Mongla and Chittagong ports, he said, "In my opinion the Awami League has seriously endangered our nation."

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni strongly protested the statement of Reaz Rahman. She said the visit should be evaluated from the South Asian context. It was not just a bilateral visit as the main focus of the trip was connectivity.

Regarding Reaz's claim about the "quantum leap", she said they were in the dark before as there has been no investment in the power sector during the last seven years.

On supporting India for getting permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, Dipu Moni said the BNP-led government had done the same with Japan on July 14, 2005.

She said the issues of water sharing of the Teesta, Tipaimukh dam project and maritime boundary did not come up suddenly. "After 1975, BNP was in power for 16 years but the issues were never raised," she claimed.

Dipu Moni urged her political opponents not to oppose for the sake of opposing. She said Bangladesh wants to move forward.

Former diplomat Farook Sobhan said if Bangladesh wants to accelerate its growth between eight and nine percent and achieve the status of a middle-income country, there is no other way but to build regional and sub-regional economic cooperation. "The key to Bangladesh's growth and development is connectivity," he said.

Greater cooperation with India, Bhutan and Nepal would open up the opportunities, he said, adding that India has made a major concession in giving Bhutan and Nepal transit to Bangladesh.

He said the visit would also give a huge push for Indian investment in Bangladesh.

Irene Khan, secretary general of Amnesty International, termed the prime minister's India visit "courageous".

"India is an economic power and we need to follow the tail end," she said. She, moreover, expressed sadness for hearing little about the opportunities that might be created by the visit.

Annisul Huq, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), expressed unhappiness over the lack of cooperation among South Asian countries despite its huge population.

Under South Asian Free Trade Area (Safta), most of the products of Bangladesh, including apparels, get duty-free access but it i

Transportation

Transportation

These 15-passenger buses are my usual mode of transportation on the island.

Currently, $2 EC (~$0.75 USD) will pay my fare from Grand Anse to St. George's.
The trip takes about 15 minutes in average, mid-day traffic.

A bus is usually manned by a two person team: a driver and a conductor.
The driver's job is to drive, operate the stereo, and honk at any possible pedestrian bus patrons. The conductor's job is to collect the fare, solicit new passengers, operate the sliding door, and arrange passengers in the small seats to fit as many people as possible.

To get on the bus, simply acknowledge any of the honking/soliciting drivers headed in the direction you're going. The conductors commonly solicit by yelling out the window at anyone who's walking around.

"BUS?!" or "You going up?" or for the ladies "Sweetie, wanna ride?"

Theoretically, they are supposed to keep driving until the next bus stop and wait for you, but the common practice is to stop traffic right where you are and help you aboard.

To get off the bus, give a loud knock on the ceiling or alert the driver with an audible "Next Stop, Please". No matter how loud the music is playing the drivers still hear those magic words.
